Susan G. Komen
for the Cure has more than 100,000 dedicated volunteers
working through a network of more than 100 Affiliates,
making it the most progressive grassroots organization
in breast cancer today. Through programs like the Komen
Race for the Cure® Series and other fundraising
and awareness events, Komen Affiliates raise tens of
millions of dollars each year to help achieve Komen
for the Cure's mission to eradicate breast cancer as
a life-threatening disease.
Up to 75 percent of an Affiliate's
net income stays in the community to fund local breast
health education and breast cancer screening and treatment
programs. Over the past five years, Komen Affiliates
have awarded more than $160 million in needs-based community
grants in support of education, screening and treatment
programs. Remaining net income (a minimum of 25 percent)
supports Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant
Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research,
meritorious awards and educational and scientific programs
around the world.
At the local level, Komen Affiliates reach more than 18,000 communities in the US. They work with health care providers and community leaders to fill unmet breast health and breast cancer needs. Komen Affiliates raise millions of dollars each year to help fight breast cancer.
They offer funding to:
| • |
Churches, housing projects and senior centers to teach breast health care in African American and Hispanic/Latina communities. |
| • |
Encourage participation in clinical trials. |
